austin - in retrospect

Filed under: Uncategorized — Green Guy @ 12:00 am

Summer is never complete without a trip down I-35 to good ole Austin, Texas. Since graduating high-school in 2005, a weekend in Austin with my Dallas buddies has been a summer staple.

The average Texas capital trip usually consists of a caravan of cars heading from Dallas to Austin; six, seven and sometimes even eight Greenhill (my highschool) grads travel down with hopes of tasty tex-mex  and good fun.

This most recent trip, unlike most, was a smaller, more manageable  group, consisting of three others besides myself. My usual host, Josh Ernst, who I previously wrote about in “jet-setting Joshua” played the part of the gracious host, which he continually does so damn well. However this trip, his promises and predictions of a great time were finally achieved.

Although my trips to Austin are usually enjoyable, it is not the city that makes the get-togethers great, it is the people. I love seeing old friends and making new ones too; however the females that frat parties usually provide are not the type that “will make my weekend.”

This short stint in Longhorn nation did contain a night of foam at the perfectly coined “cool, Jewish frat,” ZBT, however, the crazy party was far from being the best part of the weekend.

I would have to say that the small group played a key part in making this Austin weekend my favorite …ever. Our meals and down time tended to be the most fun of all: whether it was sipping Mexican Martini’s at the best frigin Tex-Mex place ever, Trudy’s, or the four of us trying to take an afternoon siesta to get ready for Saturday night; when we were together, we were having fun.

Even though what Austin had to offer did not make the weekend, there were certain “Austin specific” aspects of it that were integral parts:

First, I really enjoyed spending time with two of my other good high-school buddies, Rob and Colby, who are both residing in Austin for the summer. These enjoyable guys never seem to lose their luster. Although they both contain touches of Texas frat tradition that I am not accustomed to, these guys always help me realize that the average Jewish guy is a much better man than me. Whether I am trying to pick up women with Rob, or making fun of Colby trying to do the same, a good time is always obtainable as long as these guys are in the picture. Their friends are good guys too… as expected.

Second, instead of  sticking to the plan and going to the Saturday day-time party entitled “Fiji Island,” Mickey, Josh, Sam and I headed down to the Barton Creek Greenbelt . In our new-found appreciation of nature, my friends and I truly enjoyed buying some three dollar inner-tubes and giving floating down the river an honest chance. Although our 36″ tubes, were not properly equipped to handle the rushing rapids (due to all the rain) they served us well for the two hundred feet we floated.

Along with going with the tide, watching Josh struggle with the muddy river bank was quite a sight to see. I think he slipped five times and fell three; some quality entertainment.

Anyways, yes, Austin was great. Being joined by only three other people probably made the experience as nice as it was; our ability to agree on activities quickly helped us have a nice itinerary; and the heaping amount of alcohol that Trudy’s puts in their Mexican Martini’s (I was talking to any and every woman  after only one) and that Rob, Colby and the rest of ZBT provided us with Friday night helped us avoid what could have been a disastrous day of drinking at Fiji Island on Saturday.

All in all, the way I do Austin is changed forever. I will no longer go hoping to enjoy the fun but always regrettable times I have at the Frat parties. I will now venture down south seeking outdoor adventures with the right amount of company.

the beat

Filed under: Uncategorized — Green Guy @ 12:00 am

well, i’m exhausted after the past two days, which have been pretty busy.  but it’s been good.  i had a wonderful weekend in san carlos, but now i’m back in the o.c. and returning to my regular life.

so yesterday, mom threw a family birthday party for me at the house.  she had a lot of italian food (woot!) and invited the family over for lunch.  of course, that also meant that she sent me to retrieve grandma from her house in the city before the party.  at least i got to take the new car and enjoy listening to the satellite radio.  also, grandma was really chatty on the way back to the house, so that was surprisingly fun. :)  and it was great to see the family, even if my cousins brenda and jason weren’t able to make it.  also, theresa is back from her tour through europe, so it was great to see her and hear about her adventures there. :)

in the evening, mel, kath, and i went out for a birthday dinner. :)  we had amazing japanese food at ozuma (a san carlos institution).  mmm… veggie tempura and the best ramen ever!  and then we went over to bj’s for pizzookie for dessert.  we only needed one to share.  we ordered two.  haha!  it was a wonderful time!  just look…

see?  looks amazing, right? ;)

and then today!  i had to get up at 5:15 to make my 7:30 flight out of san francisco so i could get to work this morning.  turns out, however, that the flight was delayed because the crew’s flight last night got in late.  yeah.  so i was half an hour late and didn’t actually make it to work until 10:30, but that’s how it goes.

work was pretty uneventful today.  i worked, though i was really tired, so i avoided some of the bigger projects.  tomorrow will be better for those, i am thinking.

after work, i had a couple errands to take care of, and then i planned to get home early and crash early.  one of the few things i wanted to pick up tonight was the sountrack to the movie “hairspray.”  so looked for it at target (it was in their sunday ad, after all).  sold out.  so i looked for it at costco.  sold out.  so i looked for it at best buy.  sold out.  irvine best buy?  sold out.  borders?  sold out.  barnes and noble?  you guessed it… sold out.  seriously?!?!?!?  i should have bought it when i was at best buy on saturday morning before i saw the film.  so i told adam he must find one near him and bring it to me when he comes down on thursday.  how are there no copies anywhere?  the guy at b&n told me they sold them faster than “harry potter” books, which i’m sure was an exaggeration, but still!  so anyway, i was out until about 7 looking and failing.

and since then, i’ve just been hanging out at home enjoying a little dinner and catching up on some tv.  i am thinking i need to get to bed, however, so i’m off.  g’night. ;)

Update: >San Francisco Street Artists (0507-001) on Photoduniya.com

Here is another image of the ehru player. As I had mentioned before, he preferred to  remain anonymous, and so I shall not be quoting his name. Very soon he got used to the camera angles and knew how to “look up” to the lens.

Everyone needs Internet, right?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Green Guy @ 12:00 am

Could you be on the road for several months in a row without access to Internet? I’ve never tried, I could probably make it, but I wouldn’t want to do it. Before your next trip abroad, don’t  forget to visit cybercafes and search their database of 4208 internet cafés in 141 countries.

Monday

buell111.jpg Today was a wash-out… I contracted a major migraine headache mid-morning and ultimately came home from work early and slept 4-hours. When I get migraines, which only happens once every couple of months, the only thing that helps me is sleep. It was the best sleep I’ve had in several weeks.

I am off to Chicago tomorrow through Friday. My tentative agenda is as follows:

Tuesday: Travel, Work in hotel room, hopefully a nice long walk

Wednesday: Several PR events and interviews with the press (we have launched a new product that is pretty cool…)

Thursday: Conference event. A number of side meetings with clients and partners

Friday: Leaving for home mid-day.

From my team Laila, Mike and Tony will be at the event as well. Most of my time will be spent with Tony is coordinating all of the PR matters.

So, I have been playing with design, website function, etc. and I plan to post on that shortly. I’m trying to find my way on that topic…

The last 3 days however have been spent with my good friends at Hogwarts…

Suffice to say this is the best book of the Harry Potter series. I’ll write a non-spoiler review and put it on the “Review” page shortly. I’ve basically wrapped about 19 hours into this Saturday, Sunday and a little bit today…

I am kind of excited about going to ComiCon in San Diego with Connor, Alex and Matt unfortunately it looks like we might have waited too long to get tickets as the site indicates that the event is sold out. Going to have to have Debbie research.

That’s it, packing…

P.S. Salmon tartar is the devil…

Another Field Trip

Filed under: Uncategorized — Green Guy @ 12:00 am

We had a fairly important meeting scheduled at one of our hospitals today and I decided to attend.

With all this in mind, I stayed in bed and snoozed until diana and the kids got home around 1000.  I ate breakfast and took a shower, then got dressed in my modified scrubs.  Much like the gym shorts and the boxers, these have the right leg cut off just above the knee and the seams on the outside of the leg replaced with Velcro.  Diana also moved the drawstring over to the right side.  With that, a t-shirt, a scrub top, socks on both feet and a sneaker on the left foot, I was ready to go.  I brought my ID to ensure that no one thought I was an escaping ortho patient.

Diana dropped me at the front of the hospital where we quickly snagged a wheelchair.  Jenn met us there and took my walker and my handicap parking permit in her car so she could get a decent space.  (Jenn was my ride home, so her use of the tag was legitimate.)  We met the others in the lobby and went up to the conference room.

I deliberately have not named the hospital because of my feelings about the meeting.  To put it bluntly, it was miserable.  There were roughly 20 of us crammed into a small conference room and it was clear that they were not interested in hearing from those of us who knew the most about the procedure in question, preferring to (by one doc’s own admission) make up their own protocol.  The meeting lasted more than two hours and in the end, I’m still not sure things are properly resolved.  I suspect that the first time we use this protocol we will have a lot of complaints and arguments, even from people who were there today.  But that’s life, I suppose.

A hospital transport wheelchair is not meant for a two-hour sitting session (custom-built wheelchairs for paraplegics and quadraplegics, on the other hand, are designed for long stays).  By the end of the meeting, my butt was begging for mercy.  Jenn wheeled me out to the hospital main entrance where we discovered that a Phoenix windstorm was in progress.  She pulled the car up, left her door ajar, opened my door, and the resulting wind blew my prized handicap tag out her door and across the parking lot.  Despite best efforts on her part, even with the assistance of a hospital security guard, the tag was not recovered; I will have to get a new one from the MVD office on Thursday.

The return trip home was slow as it was around 1600 and even the HOV lane was full.  I finally got home around 1645 and went in to take a nap with the CPM machine.  I ended up answering email and voicemail, though, and not getting any extra sleep.  Diana came in around 1900 to ask if I wanted dinner and I agreed, so I moved out to the couch and had some excellent pork chops (again from Entrees Made Easy).  After that, the kids went to bed, we watched the news, and that was it.

No more trips planned until Thursday.  I can use the rest!
